It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rodney B. Wright Sr. who left us on February 24, 2025, at the age of 70. Rodney was born on April 2, 1954, in Bakersfield, CA. He was the youngest of four brothers and the fifth youngest of seven siblings. Rodney attended South High School in Bakersfield CA where he excelled in basketball, football, and baseball. His passion for sports continued throughout his life, and he went on to coach his sons at California Park in basketball. Rodney's commitment to his sons was evident in the countless hours he spent coaching, encouraging, and instilling the values of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. His coaching style was tough yet nurturing, as he taught his sons life lessons both on and off the field. He was a father figure to many children in the community, often picking up kids in his El Camino, blasting James Brown, and driving them to practices.
Rodney always told his sons that his first love was baseball. His passion for baseball led him to introduce it to his sons. He believed the best way to teach them was by hitting ground balls as hard as he could, making them stay in front of the ball. He was determined to teach them not to be afraid of the ball, and his tough love approach helped them become stronger, more confident players.
Rodney met his wife Olga when she was just 18 years old at the Ohio Players concert in Bakersfield, CA. After the show, Rodney asked for her number but not having a pen, told her he had a photographic memory, and give it to him anyways. This memorable moment marked the beginning of a relationship that lasted for 45 years. Though their relationship had its ups and downs, they loved each other unconditionally, demonstrating the strength of their bond throughout the years.
Together, they shared countless memories, weathered life's challenges, and supported one another with unwavering love. In 2000, Rodney moved to Fresno, where he became an owner-operator of his own trucking business. His dedication to providing for his family was unwavering, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that his children had everything they needed to succeed in life. Rodney had many passions, including singing, cooking, fishing, and hunting with his family. He found great joy in spending time with his loved ones, especially when attending every sports game for his sons, cheering them on as they excelled. His love for his family and the moments shared with them were some of the greatest treasures of his life.
Rodney was a spiritual man. He loved the Lord, and he enjoyed discussing the scriptures with his brother Chuck. Whether while on the road or at home, they spent countless hours sharing all that God had revealed to them. When possible, he would meet Chuck at a Church in Fresno so that he could fellowship with other believers. For that we are thankful.
Rodney's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Rodney will be forever cherished and remembered by his family and friends. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud papa, and loyal friend, whose presence will be deeply missed. Rodney B. Wright Sr., 70, of Fresno, CA, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, at Clovis Community Hospital in Fresno, CA. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Wright Sr. and Ruby Velma Hailey, as well as his older brother Ricky Wright and younger sister Carla Johnson.
Rodney is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Olga Wright, and his four sons: Brandon Hankins (Nikki) of Bakersfield, CA, Rodney Bernard Wright Jr. (Michele) of Bakersfield CA, Jesus Pedro Wright(Amanda) of Bakersfield CA and Joshua Ryan Wright of Los Angeles CA. Rodney is also survived by his brothers Dwight Wright and Chuck Wright, sisters Janice McFadden and Lynette Porter, his grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
